The kholkhal is a traditional jewel for women, a kind of bracelet for feet that goes to the ankle. This golden Berber jewelry was part of the dowry offered by the man to his wife. The pair of bracelets weighed a kilo a whole. These jewels are part of a courtship ritual. Kholkhal noise, punctuated by the approach of women, spoke volumes about the one that was, even without seeing it. This tradition is almost extinct, but some memories remain in the Medina of Tunis.

The Kholkhal has another great meaning in the songs of the Tunisian Maalouf: often a Kholkhal has three or four rings in silver and have a more or less standard diameter, these rings resonate walking the woman, from there you can provide for the physical of the woman by the sound of these rings, a woman called "a dumb Kholkhal" means she has pretty good solid legs !! so that the rings completely without places side by side at the foot there is no game to make sound! it also applies at the handles of hand! a woman is said "to mute handle" (al Kharsae mi'âsam).
